Programs for which source code is available may be ported to the Apple
II (e.g. Apple III Pascal programs are highly compatible with Apple II
Pascal).
Apple III programs can often share data with Apple II programs, since
SOS and ProDOS use the same file system.
The best example of both points is AppleWorks. It was originally an
Apple III program called "III Easy Pieces". It was later ported to
the Apple II, and called "AppleWorks". "III Easy Pieces" only runs on
an Apple III, and "AppleWorks" only runs on an Apple II, but Word
Processor, Database and Spreadsheet files can be used with either
program (as long as you don't use features that are unique to newer
versions of AppleWorks).
