Not as simple as that but you are on the right track.
The situation was confusing in early versions of Mac OS X, as it started
out missing lots of features from Mac OS 9 which were gradually added
back in the next few versions. I think 10.0 didn't support AFP over
AppleTalk but it reappeared by 10.2.
AFP over AppeTalk was dropped in Mac OS X 10.4. Since then, you have to
use AFP over TCP/IP.
This rules out any possibility of an Apple IIgs connecting to Mac OS X
10.4 or later, unless there is a third party solution (such as an AFP
over TCP/IP implementation for the IIgs, or an AFP over AppleTalk file
server for Mac OS X 10.4).
Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 still supports AppleTalk for printing (and
associated name binding).
Mac OS X 10.6 has dropped the last pieces of AppleTalk. If you have an
old AppleTalk-only printer it cannot connect directly to a Mac running
10.6 or later.
