Someone oughtta talk him into releasing the source code to a person capable
of making/keeping it current.

I wouldn't expect the actual file format to be under copyright.
Someone ought to mail the Aladdin guys and ask. Or someone could try to
reverse engineer a stuffit file to figure it out.
