I agree with David, that being able to explicitly test whether the
control key is pressed (just polling in the keyboard routine would
be fine--no need for a latch) would be more useful than being
able to read the eighth bit of the kbd ROM.
With respect to the shift key mod, "platinum" Apple //e's have it
by default, as David noted, but it is a "bowtie" on the motherboard,
and can be cut to "uninstall" it. Earlier //e motherboards (I don't
know how far back) have the same mod, but defaulted to uninstalled.
There's a "split circle" etch not far from the numeric keypad socket
which allows the shift key mod to be made just by bridging the
split with a bit of solder.
In the case of the earlier mod (at least), it is *exactly* like the old
shift key mod wire, which poses a problem if you also install a PB2
by plugging into the DIP game port--namely, pushing the button at
the same time the shift key is depressed shorts the +5 supply to
ground!! (Bridging the split circle or the cut bowtie with a, say, 5K
resistor eliminates this danger.)
