modem and software recommendations

   My sister has a --> Laser 128 EX (I think) <--, which I believe is an Apple 
II clone of some sort.  She bought this primarily for her kids' school 
work and uses AppleWorks for most of that work.  She would like to add a modem 
to access the Internet and asked me for help.  I get around on the IBM-PC 
(clone) side of the world pretty well, but am lost with the entire Apple side. 
Can anyone make suggestions about modems, communications software, or related 
subjects?  Also, assuming we can get her machine running on the Internet, are 
there any good sites you might recommend for her family to visit?
