Question about 3.5" drive...

I was wondering if anyone could help me out--a couple of days ago
while I was about to launch SoniqTracker (I'm only running System 5.0.4),
there was a strange noise, and a dialog box popped up saying I had an I/O
error. Upon ejecting the disk, I noticed a small metal square sitting on
top of it. I have no idea what it is--it's about 2cm square with one side
having the letter "V" near the top, and 'G79A19' near the bottom; the
other side has the remnants of some sort of glue..?
Can anyone tell me what it does, and if it will need to be
re-attached (I doubt it since my drive still works, but...)
