At one time I had a 600+ MB connected to my IIGS (2 x 310MB). I couldn't
stand the very cluttered Finder - lotsa HD icons! So I partioned one
drive into 3 x 32 ProDOS the remaining 200+ as one HFS volume, the other
drive I gave a small ProDOS partition (where I kept a clean Sys 6) and a
300 HFS. Since then I sold one drive, but I still have one left with 3 x
32 ProDOS and 200 MB HFS. I have had this setup since System 6 was
released and the one partition I NEVER have had any problems with is the
HFS, and it used daily. Maybe I'm lucky?

I do need to get the HFS volume defragged and there's no program to do
that for the GS, but I friend is coming over with another big HD and I'll
just file copy everything over to that and reformat my HFS volume and copy
back. Not very elegant way to optimize, but it works...

Backups - uhm, I have never tried to backup the whole HFS volume, I just
move important stuff to disk (not regulary enough..) But I believe
Apple's Archiver should handle backing up HFS, at least it let's me store
my backup from ProDOS on HFS.

I wouldn't go with 12 (or 20) ProDOS volumes. But that's me...
