HELP!
I've got a problem!
I recently had my HD get munched. That's not the problem since I have a
decently current backup set, generated with Apple's "backupII" program.
The actual problem is that when I tried to recover, I found that my
backup set is bad.
Does anyone know what kind of format the backupII program uses to store
the files on the backup volumes? I've tried several methods of tinkering,
trying to get into the disks and, with luck, repair things so that the
restore function doesn't crash and die when it hits the errors. So far,
no luck.
The closest I came was when I used ProBlock to copy a block range to a
large RAMdisk, then used the same method to put it back onto a "real"
disk. But backupII doesn't recognize the disk as being part of the backup
set. So much for that plan... Well, let's cheat a little...
Put the blown disk in the drive and hit space then <ctrl-s>. Wait until
lights stop blinking as output of the filename is paused. Now swap the
blown disk for the one I finagled around. Everything worked nicely...
'til I hit the "next disk" prompt... backupII goes crash-n-burn with no
message, just "hit <ESC> to quit" OK, scratch that plan.
Run a disk verify to find out which disks are actually bad. 5 of the 19
show a total of 21 errors. Now what?
Write a plea for help and post it to the 'net, I guess... So here it is.
If anybody can help me, PLEASE drop me some E-mail!
FWIW: I'm running an enhanced Apple //e with a QRAM //e 1 Meg memory
expansion, an Apple SCSI card, and a 3.5" unidisk (and some other toys
that I don't think come into the picture) I have CopyII+ (can't recall
the version number right now) ProBlock, and a handful of other
"disk-snooper" type programs that I can use, and the knowledge of
ProDOS/6502 ML to put together quick-n-dirty tricks if I have to.
Hopefully, I won't...
Somebody out there MUST know how backupII stores the files on the backup
volumes. If I can get that information, I may be able to patch around the
handful of blown blocks without causing backupII to go into spasms over
the fact that the disks have been diddled. If you're that somebody,
PLEASE take a moment to either pass the info on to me, or at least point
me to someplace I can dig it up myself.
Thanks in advance...
