WANTED: KRACKED COPY OF "WHERE IN USA IS CARMEN SANDIEGO"
=========================================================
[Before sending flames for my use of the "k-word," read all of this memo!]
I had the _original_ of "Where in the USA Is Carmen Sandiego," by
Broderbund. This was the original disk, the box, the "map" (instructions),
and the USA almanac book. It was included on a IIC system purchase,
although I was not very interested in it. I did not get very far on it,
but it booted and ran o.k. on my Apples.
I resold the software package but the buyer has reported that it
will not load at all on his IIgs, and runs only partially on his IIc.
I have an extensive collection of A+, InCider, and Nibble, and
found the following 1989 "APPLE CLINIC" article about Broderbund copy-
protection and its incompatibility with some software:
QUOTED FROM:
INCIDER MAGAZINE, AUGUST 1989, P.28

COPY PROTECTION:
"I recently tried booting a Broderbund game that runs
fine on a friend's IIe, but on my IIc the disk drive just whirls. I
have another Broderbund game that also wont book on my IIc. Is there
something wrong with my computer, or any I just stuck with incompatible
software?"

(APPLE CLINIC REPLIES)
"A similar problem occurred on one of my older IIe's when
I tried to boot a copy of Broderbund's Print Shop for the first time. I
contacted the company's technical hot line and found out that the disk's
copy protection scheme requires that the host disk drive be in top
condition."

The problem appears to stem from Broderbund's excessive
copy-protection.
Because of this, I feel that it is legitimate to ask if anyone has a version
that will play on an ordinary Apple. Its _not piracy_ when the
copy-protection
itself is so finicky that it requires a disk drive in perfect adjustment for
the factory original disk to load! As our hardware ages, keeping the drives
in perfect adjustment will become increasingly difficult.
Have I contacted Broderbund about this problem? No; I last contacted
Broderbund in late 1993 regarding Bank Street Writer Plus, and I was told
that
no one at Broderbund follows the Apple II any more ....
So, anyone got a bootable backup of this "overprotected orphan"?
