Check that you have the appropriate files installed correctly.

In the System folder, there should be a small application (about 3
blocks, I think) called START.  There should also be a large
application (about 360 blocks) called FINDER.

If START is large, it is probably the Finder.  This may have happened
if you used the wrong installation option, or installed over a previous
version of the system software, or had a custom START file before
installing System 6.

You will have to run another copy of Finder to correct this (boot off
a floppy, for example).  Copy the file "Start" from the System folder of
the System 6.0.1 "Install" disk into the system folder of your hard
drive.  Also copy the file "Finder" from the System folder of the
"SystemTools1" disk into the system folder.

If you want to take the easy route, boot the Install disk, click on
"Customize", and install "System 6:Hard Disk or FDHD" onto your hard
drive.
