I have lived this scenerio myself.  I had a Unidisk from my //c, 
sold it, and then wanted to use it with my ][e enhanced.  I found 
first that the Laser controller didn't cut it. The drive just 
stayed activated.  I then got an Apple 3.5 controller (early 
rev.), which also proved useless.  The Later rev card fixed the 
problem.  The main difference is in the Unidisk drive itself.  An 
Apple 3.5 is a "dumb" drive, a Unidisk is not.  The later 
controller addresses this issue accordingly for whichever drive 
it detects.   The laser controll works fine (according) to a 
friend of mine who used one) with the Apple 3.5, but as I said 
already, not the Unidisk.  Hope this helps.
