Get yourself a couple of self-powered short-haul modems. Then you'll be
able to use cheap phone cable and run at high speed (whatever the modems
are capable of).
Running over long lengths of RS-232 cable is not recommended for anything
important unless you use special "low capacitance" cable - usually a
light blue colour.
