 Well, I'm no expert in this by any means, but I would definitely say 
that you should be getting a single cable with maximum sheilding.  No 
matter how you go, the less the physical number of connections, the 
better.
  As for speed, well, I wouldn't want to drop below 38.4k just for the 
sake of usability.  But experiment.  Whatever works for you.
