Re: Hard drive info & 8 bit cards on IIgs

Ok. On the hard drive. First, you need to get a case with a power
supply. That should have that four pin connector (which is the power
connections) that should only be able to go in one way. The case should
also have a 50pin ribbon cable that will plug into the HD. Ok, unless you
have another HD, you're done. If you have another HD, you'll have to set
the SCSI ID to something other than the ID on the other drive. Next, call
Quality Computers (1-800-777-3642) and order the RAMFast to 50pin SCSI
drive. It's about $25, I think. One last thing: make sure your drive is
auto-terminated, otherwise you'll need a SCSI terminator block, which I'm
sure Quality will have. Crank everything up and you should get some
message from the RAMFast saying that it's searching the SCSI port (it
could take up to 45 seconds! :) and if all is cool, the RAMFast menu
will pop up and let you configure your HD. (If it's not formatted or if
it's formatted at an interleave other than 1:1, reformat it. Then
partion it, high-level format it. [If you're going to use ProDOS 8, the
RF will format it, otherwise, use GS/OS or whatnot.] Blah...that's it.)
After going through all this, I know how to do it. :) Heh. Good luck.
Oh, yes, and as for the 8-bit cards, the majorit of them work with no
problems at all, but some (mainly the ones that rely on the 1MHz 6502 for
timing) won't work. But maybe someone a bit more hardware technical could
clear that up. Later on.
