Re: Doom Conversion (was Dragons Lair
: Anyway, there is still one question, COULD Doom be done on the ][gs?
Not easily. And it would be terribly slow, especially with the GS's integer
math capabilities being so limited. An FPE card would be a blessing :)
: I know it would take a 10Mhz (maybe 14Mhz) chip, and a HD (what
: serious ][gs user is out there that does NOT have a hard drive?)
Probably a 14MHz at least for reasonable speed. If it doesn't perform well
on a 386/40, then 10MHz is out of the question, but a 14MHz I hear is
comparable to a 486/25 or 486/33, so that may be doable.
: and 2, maybe 4 meg of Ram. And don't forget a graphics card!
You would need more than 2 megs of RAM. 4 megs MAY do it, but virtual
memory would be a necessity, at least in my humble opinion :)
: and who would convert the Engine? I do not know how Burger Bill
: got the rights to release a ][gs Wolfenstein, but there must be a way
: to obtain rights for Doom.
The story about Burger Bill and iD is a long one, and I haven't heard all
of it. But I don't care what the story is, as long as I have Wolf on my GS.
<grin>
The engine would be very VERY difficult on the GS, since it is inherantly
slow -- and for the people who don't have an accelerator, would they really
consider buying one just to play DOOM on their GS in maybe 1/2 screen? A
full screen Doom is probably impossible on the GS without an accelerator,
4.5 to 5 megs memory minimum, and a hard drive with a RAMfast (if virtual
memory was implemented a RAMfast would be essential because of it's RAM
cache).
DOOM _is_ possible on the GS -- but only on stocked GSes. I could be wrong
on this one, so thwap me if I am, but I am pretty confident on my points.
