So do LDA and STA (via the monitor and/or mini-assembler), and they are
an awful lot faster. The point was that if you are designing and
building your own I/O card, you can probably program in assembly
language or machine code, so you would be using machine language
instructions to access the card, not BASIC.

That was Soenke's point. "Mainstream" computers (i.e. the PC family)
does not have unique addresses for each slot. Anyone coming to the
Apple II from the PC might make a similar assumption about the Apple
II family.
