I think you may be trying to describe the "floptical" drives.
These drives use a sepcial 3 1/2" disk that holds 21 Megs per
disk.
I think some are made using a SCSI interface so you might me able
to hook one up to a ][e but you would probably have to write some
drivers to be able to use it.
But IMHO you would be MUCH better off just installing a hard drive
as the Floptical drive are a few hundred and the disks are something
like $20 or $30 each. Per Meg it wouldn't be worth it for a ][e.
