Re: Dragon's Lair II, GS version in limbo?
I highly doubt a Doom GS will ever be available.. I have a 486-33 and Doom
II can often get really slow when you have about 60 monsters around you
and you are firing 25 shots every few seconds.. I don't think even the
fastest GS could keep up with it.. You really need at least a dx2-66 to
run Doom II without any slowdowns, and lets face it, a GS even at 10mhz is
no where even CLOSE to a dx2-66 in raw processing power.. Wolf 3d is
EXTREMELY different than Doom or Doom II, the Doom graphics engines are a
lot more powerful and a lot more flexible than wolf 3d.. anyone who has
played wolf3d and doom could tell you that Doom is just 100 times more
complex than wolf3d.. In Doom you can go up stairs, down stairs, be in
rooms which are true circles, not squares, the monsters and weapons
sprites are much more detailed and much more nasty. :) To make it blunt, I
think a port of any doom to a GS would be so incredibly slow that it
wouldn't even be playable. If I slow my dx-33 down to like a 286-8 I get a
frame of animation about every 5 seconds in a room with NOTHING in it.. so
you start talking tracking 200 monsters simutaniously, along with drawing
the graphics and doing the calcuations to figure out all the shadows,
textures, positions of just the walls and floors, and then lump on top of
that the drawing of weapons projectives, monster projectives, tracking the
projectiles as they fly and do that keeping a frame speed of something
playable is highly unlikely.. I would like to see the speed of Wolf 3d on
a GS, take that speed, divide it by about 10 and you will get the speed of
a Doom port to the GS.. and keep in mind that in Doom, unlike Wolf3d, you
could get by on the GS's color limitations.. In Doom you probably have 16
colors per monster... get 25 monsters in one room (Not usual to have more
than that) and you all of a sudden start running into major problems.. and
not everyone has the 14 mhz GS chip in their machines.. anyways, my 2
cents from an ex-GS owner who still misses it.
