bank street writer files to IBM?

I am trying to help someone to port his wordprocessing
files from an Apple IIe to an IBM pc. The files were
created using Broderbund's Bank Street Writer.

By reading the FAQ, I learned that Apple File Echange (AFE)
can read ProDOS disks, so I thought the easiest way to get
the files to a PC would be to port them to my MAC first, then
use AFE to put them on a DOS disk. But it hasn't worked out
that way.

First shot was to just take a disk full of Bank Street Writer
files and try to read it into the MAC. That worked ok, but the
files were apparently not ASCII files and MS Word 5.1 didn't
recognize them as readable files. When I forced it to open
them, they looked like typical binary nonsense characters.

Next try was to use Bank Street Writer's capability to print
to a file (w/o formatting characters). When I tried a disk
full of these files, again AFE was able to transfer the files
to the MAC, and this time MS Word recognized them as text,
but when I opened them, they still looked like garbage!
What gives? I tried both default and text translation modes
in Apple File Exchange with similar results. Does anybody
know how to do this short of a direct computer to computer
link over a serial connection?

Thanks for any help you can give me. Reply either to me
directly or post it here.
