While it's true that someone could release a card with a new UART chip, I
don't see why anyone would want to. Remember that old serial card from
Apple called the "Apple Super Serial Card"? With an add-on card the
original Super Serial Card is capable of 38,400 - 57,600 - 115,200 and
230,400bps!
I've persoanlly tested this add-on card (Turbo ASB) at speeds of 38,400 -
57,600 and 115,200 (haven't found anything that'll do 230,400bps yet) and
have acheived in excess of 8000 cps on transfers to my Apple //e.
