The surest way to find out is to open up the modem. If it's actually
made by Hayes it would have the Hayes name silkscreened on the PCB.
Also, Hayes 28.8k v.FC modems use a Rockwell v.FC dsp and a Motorola
68302 microcontroller. Most other 28.8k v.FC modems use a different
microcontroller (possible one by Rockwell). Upgrading to v.34 requires
that you replace the Rockwell v.FC dsp with a v.34/v.FC dsp and update
the firmware by replacing an EEPROM (it helps if both chips are
socketed). If you can't order the v.34 upgrade from the manufacturer
maybe you can order it from a different manufacturer (as long as their
modem is similar and uses the same microcontroller).
