Yes, you need the driver from GSTape.  The SCSI tape driver that comes
with the System Software is only for the old Apple Tape Drive.  The
driver that comes with GSTape will recognize most SCSI tape drives,
although I don't know if Archiver will use it properly (never tried).
Once you get GSTape for the driver, you'll want to use GSTape for you
backups anyway!

If you want to test out the drive quickly, grab the GSTape demo from one
of the Apple II FTP sites.  It includes a driver which should at least
recognize the drive.  (I found the program and driver in the full
version worked a bit better, but the demo did work with my Wangtek.)
