][gs - Much help needed

I want to help a friend get his ][gs up and running.

I downloaded system 6.0.1 from Apple(disk image),
but I believe he needs a hard drive.

Is this true?

What is involved in installing a hard drive?

And, where can I get the needed hardware?

He'd also like the capability to be on-line with our school system (vt100).

I downloaded Kermit (caltech.edu) for the ]['s,
but it is in a compression form foreign to me.

I do not know how to decompress it.

I work on the MAC platform and do all my FTP-ing there.

What do I need to know to decompress the Apple downloads and transfer them
to the ][gs (i.e. I know about and use Apple File Exchange).
