Another place for screws, in general, is inside battery compartments, so
it's always possible (but I suspect unlikely) for a screw to be in the

usually a "door" that can be removed so you can get the ball out to
clean.

This is the thing I don't understand here. If the original poster is
just wanting to clean the mouse, why not just pop the ball out, clean
the rollers through the hole the ball was in, clean the ball and put it
back in? No need to open the shell of the mouse at all unless the
cleaning involves a retrobrite bath for the shell to deal with yellowing
but I don't think that is the case.

It is, but I'm not using chemicals. I just want to scrub the hand grime off
of the top half of the shell without getting the internals wet.

If that's all, just make sure your cloth with whatever cleaning fluid
you use is barely damp. Unless you're trying to get to the insides, you
can clean a mouse fine without worry.

I clean keyboards this way, though usually by the time they need cleaning
it is worth opening them up since there is gunk that falls in between the keys. But I sure don't open keyboards because I'm worried about liquid
getting inside.
