Er, you really didn't have to work THAT hard.  There was a spot WEST of the
town from which you could blink next to Cove.  As long as you didn't mind
wandering through poisonous muck trial-and-erroring which square it was,
it was a lot easier than finding a whirlpool. 

And Ultima V was harder, but not by that much -- some of the spells in
Ultima V -rocked- compared to IV's spellbook.
