Hehe. Is this Mr. Ed, or Smith, the Talking Horse[tm]?

The match-the-runes trick worked for me.

Embarrassment: I got well into U IV, virtually to Abyss-storming strength,
with a Paladin as my lead character -- and couldn't find Katrina, the
Shepherdess. Ended up restarting as a Shepherd just so I knew where my
seven companions would be. I didn't find Katrina until I played Ultima V
and went back out of nostalgia to IV years later.

That was in Ultima V, and was VERY helpful in a pinch; wield it, and the
next monster you strike DIES. Your sword breaks, but you can go get another
one from the Ankh alcove later. Handy when you're battered and have one
too many dragons to blast your way through in a dungeon, or when you're
low level, looking for equipment and find a dragon in the wilderness.
WHOP! Instant treasure chests.

jeff. who finds UltimaGS I veeeeeerry tempting.
