Extended kbd on IIgs glitches ???

I bought an extended Apple keyboard for my IIgs so I could use all the
nifty function keys, recognizing of course that not all apps support them.
 Imagine my surprise when I hit an F-key in Applesoft and the keyboard
started auto-repeating!  Hit any other key and it stops.  This behavior
occurs in Teach, EGOEd, and a few other text-based programs.

Hooking my Mac keyboard up to the IIgs made no difference, so I know the
kbd isn't faulty.  In all other respects the kbd works fine.  What gives?

IIgs ROM 01, 6.0.1, GS-RAM 4MB, RAMFast 3.01c rev D, ZIPGS 8/16.  No
additional inits.
