There are alternatives to the Finder out there. I think there
are several available on cco.caltech.edu. Also, if I remember
correctly, the system software comes with something called Basic
Launcher or something like that. It was originally included
with the old 256K GS systems. To have it launch instead of the
Finder, rename the Finder to something other than Start, put
Basic.Launcher in whatever directory the Finder is in, and rename
it Start. One other program you may want to look for is
JumpStart. It's a program launcher that uses less memory than
the Finder, and if you want the extra file utilities of the
Finder, you can install an NDA called File Manager. If I recall
correctly, FM is either Freeware or Shareware.
