I've heard some people discussing whether the Apple // could fax.  I
actually didn't remember anything that would allow it to do so --
until I found an old magazine.

Believe it or not, the Apple // _can_ fax.

There an ad here on p.115 of the January 1990 "InCider/A+".  

The modem that allows the Apple // to send fax is called the Applied
Engineering "Datalink Express -- Upgradable".

Here are some excerpts:

"..first..addition of send-Fax capability and MNP error correction..."

"text and graphics can be composed on your Apple II and _directly_
faxed at 4800 baud.."
