If the backslashes don't work (and they probably won't unless you're on UNIX),
try using quotation marks instead:

    cd "pub/Apple SW Updates/Apple II"

All the FTP clients I'm familiar with recognize quotation marks as an
indicator that the enclosed string is a single file name, even if it has
spaces in it.

If the quotation marks don't work, check to see whether or not your system
has a version of gopher. Files on ftp.support.apple.com are available by
gopher as well as by FTP, and gopher isn't bothered in the least by
filenames with spaces in them.

If you have a World Wide Web browser (Mosaic, lynx, or something similar),
you can use that to get the files too. Tell the browser to start at
"http://www.support.apple.com/";.
