I have been thinking of adding an extra row of sockets between
the Wide sockets to allow me to use skinny SRAM chips. However,
with all this talk about the SRAM being flaky with line noise I
was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on whether adding the
extra socket "row" would somehow add to the noise and possibly
hurt things more than help?

(I would desolder the wide sockets but my soldering experience
is limited and my desoldering experience is nonexistent!)
