For starters, if they're SHK files, are you in Binary mode (type "binary" at
FTP prompt) when "get"ting with FTP?
Getting binaries in Ascii mode will corrupt them in the manner in which
you describe. This will not corrupt binscii files, natch.
If not, also check if your terminal had Binary II download options (which
may be conflicting and is usually best set off unless absolutely sure).
