This is from the sheets that WDC used to require you to get first before
you can buy an engineering chip...  "In addition, currerent 65C816 chips
cannot execute certain instructions reliably when operating beyond 4 
MHz; circuitry on the TWGS intercepts those calls and allows extra time
for their exectution.  However, when you reach 10 MHz, additional 
instructions do not excute reliably in 16 bit mode.  The TWGS does not
intercept these instructions unless you use a revision E or later TWGS 
3 GAL."

So, perhaps with the new chip fab techniques, these problems were cured.
So a 3D GAL might actually let you go slightly faster than 3E.  :-)

Couple of ways, from the TWGS CDA menu:

     TransWarp GS version 8/32S
            Revision 1.8S
       Copyright (c) 1989-1991
        Applied  Engineering

Or look at the little piggy back board, if you can see the 4 chips on
it, then you have the old 8 KB cache.  If you can't see them, it's
the 32 KB cache.
