WDC W65C816S8PL-14 MHZ
I've been playing with these 14 Megahurtz rated 65c816 from WDC for
almost two days now. These are my findings.
The bad news first. Someone claimed that this part runs at 20 MHz.
I was unable to get it to run anywhere near that frequency at any
voltage level. All I got at 20 MHz was a nice checkered screen.
The good news is that at 5 V it not only runs reliably at 14 MHz, but
also up to 15.5 MHz. I haven't tried it at > 5 V other than at 20
MHz. I don't plan to play around with increasing the voltage unless
I have free time and nothing fun to do.
System used for testing consists of ROM 03 IIgs, 6 MB CVRam (7 MB total
system ram), RamFast Rev. D ROM 3.00l (if I remember correctly) and a
very useful CPU ZIF socket (I would highly recommend this $20 device if
you do a lot of testing where you need to constantly extract and
install the Zip board). My definition of "runs reliably" is being able
to run all 8- and 16-bit software over an extended period of time (at
least overnight) with no crashes, no garbage left on the Finder, and no
