What exactly do you mean by "pauses", and when and how often do they occur?
Also, is this only when the screen is blanked, or does it make a difference?

No, this isn't normal.  UB's load on the system SHOULD be imperceptable.
The current version, btw, is 2.08, which is somewhat faster during blanking. 
Go ahead and try it (it's on c.b.a2, and at least on grind), and let me know
as much information as you can on what's happening.
