HP printers and the GS
Hi, folks...
I'm kind of in a spot, here, and dunno what to do.
I know that one of either the HP DeskWriter, or the DeskJet
has a built in font, so it can be printed to from ProDOS 8,
like from AppleWorks, without a GS/OS printer driver.
I know it's already been discussed to death on here, but
for some reason, I can't remember which one it is.
Here's the situation. A friend of mine just ordered
a Power PC, and we want to put the PPC, the printer, and
his GS all on an AppleShare network. However, it would be
nice if he could just hook it up directly to the GS for use
with AppleWorks, if he wanted to.
For this application, it seems obvious that the
DeskWriter is the choice, since it comes with a localtalk
port, and the DeskJet only has parallel. I was just hoping
that the one with the localtalk port, and the one with
the ProDOS 8 ability were one in the same, but I don't
think they are, unfortunately.
The next question, is... Are there currently or planned
any appletalk compatible GS/OS drivers for the DeskWriter? If
not, this whole idea may go up in smoke.
If anyone knows of another printer by the same or a
different manufacturer which has the same or similar output
to a HP DeskWriter 560C (~300dpi, color, approx price range)
but is better suited to what I'm trying to put together, then
please speak up! It should hopefully be localtalk capable,
accept ascii text as input if desired, and have a driver available.
Thank you very much,
