I'd replace both 6551 (replace 'em with 65C51's ... they're CMOS and use
less energy) and the 1488 & 1489.  If that doesn't fix it, you're screwed
because it's a logic program.  Those four chips are the only ones that
are involved in serial communications ... oops ... there is also a single
oscilator to clock the baud rate ... you might try that too ...

Anyway, if all else fails, a new motherboard from any number of mail order
places (I use Shreve systems) is around $50-$60.
