Alas, you were correct up to this point, but you munged the second law.

This should be "As soon as your original battery needs to be replaced, your
spare Nite Owl Battery will turn up dead, as well."

Meaning, of course, that the Nite Owl Battery state determines the law
under which you operate (or fail to operate).  A salt will get you a 4K
longer sentence.  ;-)
