People have been very successful at emulating an Apple ][+ and //e on
a PC, Macintosh and Unix (hell, even I've written an Apple ][+ emulator
for Unix/X). Emulating a 65816 would be dead easy--I could probably
upgrade my emulator within a few days to run 65816 opcodes. Emulating
super hi-res would be even easier than emulating standard hi-res or
double hi-res. Emulating the GS specific softswitches and I/O shouldn't
be too much of a problem either.
The three problems as I see them are:
1. Speed. You'd be unlikely to get an emulated GS running much above
1 Mhz on a typical PC, Macintosh or Unix box (such as a SparcStation).
2. Sound. Emulating the Ensoniq DOC would be tricky (although probably
not completely impossible).
3. ROM. The GS requires a hell of a lot of it. Inevitably someone will
download the full GS ROM to the Internet so people can run their
emulators, and goodness knows how Apple will react to that :-)
