ProTERM Emulation for VT100????

A friend is having trouble trying to talk with his apple iigs on a
qmodem2400 to a sun unix box. Resetting the term env doesn't seem to
help for either appleII or vt100. He gets extra characters and soemtimes
sees the escape characters on the screen. His emulation mode is set for
vt100. Any other tweaks you can recommend? Thanks.
