No, for the 5 1/4" drives that stored 140K if info.

Yes, for the 3.5" drives that stored 1 Meg of info.
I had one of these drives, and they used the same mechanism
as the Mac drives.  The main difference was that you had to
add a special 'SmartDrive' interface card to the ][, //, etc.
It, along with a 1Meg ram expansion (mostly used as RamDisk)
allowed me to use my old workhorse for an additional 3 years
before deciding it was just too outdated.
