Deskjet & Grappler

I have an apple IIGS, a Grappler + interface card, and a Deskjet 500. I am
finding that when I use appleworks to print out a file I have one of these
problems

1) I get a # (i think) at the top of the first sheet which is then
immediately "form fed" through the machine and THEN the file prints

or

2) ON at the top of the paper and then the file prints on that sheet

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
