I'd say it's not likely that they will be discontinued as long as there are
Powerbook Duos which don't have built in floppies. They have HDI20 connectors
which would be hard to connect to a DB19 like on a superdrive card. Also they
have those icky manual inject mechanisms that the Mac crowd is complaining
about these days.

I'm guessing you mean take a HD mechanism and swap it into an external 800K
floppy. My experience from swapping a Mac 800K drive into a unidisk tells me
that there's no difference in the mechanisms. There could possibly be some
difference in the daisy chain logic board inside the case but then again maybe
not.
