Apple II Newbie question

I was given an Apple II a fe years ago and was told that it didn't work. I
hooked it up and it worked just fine, but without any peripherals it was
useless. I bought a 5.25" floppy drive, which seemed to work alright at first,
but later it started to destroy the data the was on my disks. I'm just now
getting around to checking the system out, and I need some help. There were a
couple of cards in the machine that I haven't been able to identify; is there
any good source ( book, magazine ) that could tell me what these cards are?
Also, I'd like to get it working at it's full potential, so is there somewhere
that I could get hardware for it ( i.e., 80 col. cards, hard drives, modems )
and is there any ftp sites or bbs's that I could get some software?
