HyperC works on II+ except for ESC (help!)

Thanks to Wulf Hofbauer I now have a working C compiler on the
old II+.  I installed the opix system and shell and everything
works fine with one exception:  the escape key is ignored.  I
therefore cannot use the editor or the configuration utility.

I have a videx-type 80-column card in slot 3.  I wrote a little
BASIC program using the GET() function and verified that the key
works whether or not I have executed a PR#3 or IN#3.  It never
fails.  Something is gobbling up the escape key.

Has anyone encountered and overcome this problem?  I won't go
into the guts of the drivers if someone else has already done
so.
