AppleWorks, IIe and a HP DeskWriter inkjet printer?

I have a friend who is running AppleWorks 2.0 on a 128k Apple IIe with 2 
5.25" drives.  She wants to replace her Prowriter with an HP Deskwriter.  
What will she need?  I assume her printer interface card will not work 
(sorry, don't know what she has - probably a Grappler or 4th Dimension.)  
Will she need to upgrade to AW 4.0 - Is it realistic using 5.25" disks?  
Any information anyone can provide is greatly appreciated.
