Maybe my analogies about students/adults fell flat? Let me sum it all up...
If you say things politely to people, they are more apt to respond in a
friendly manner.
If you word things to people in a hostile way, they are more apt to respond
in a hostile manner.
And, finally...when you offer constructive criticism, it's more likely
that the criticism will be heard if it is worded delicately.
