Cool!  I am following up to my own follow up.  I just checked my archie.   
Source for the latest version of gzip is located at the following sites &  
directories:

wilbur.stanford.edu     /pub/gzip
ee.utah.edu             /gzip/gzip

The latest version is 1.2.3 I believe.  (I have 1.1.2 installed on my system  
and it hasn't balked at the later versions of gzip.)  There is a ton a work to  
be done to port.  The archive file was something around 750K or there abouts.  
(At least that was the uncompressed version.)
