This Old Apple IIgs

Hello all!

I have a apple iigs ROM #1 with 256k on mb and another 256k on a card.
First the problems:
	1. The machine can't reconize the extra memory on the card. I set the 
jumpers to the setting in my friends manual, but the machine gives me an 
error message on boot. The only way to avoid this is to disable the extra 
memory.
	2. The 3.5" disk drive works in strange ways. When it needs to 
use the floppy drives, the drive light comes on, but nothing happens. 
Now, get this: turning the drive vertical || and giving it a shake gets 
the thing going, until the next R/W. No error message or anything!

Now as you can see I know almost nothing about the iigs. (I treat it as a 
iie!). If anyone has info how to upgrade this machine, I would love to know.
(note: expain gs/os, the mac like look,...)

If this machine is to get a new lease on life, it will have to be as the 
kitchen computer! ducking!
It should be able to:
	* GUI word process
	* Educational games (Math Blaster, Orgean trail...)
	* manage money
	* recipe database
	* Phone MESSAGE board (typed on the keyboard)

What I think I can do to it:
	* Add a hard drive
	  I have a 120 IDE drive, can I use that?
	* More Memory, so i can run that gs/os thingie.
	* ???

I'm posting this after reading evil dan's (The apple is dead person) 
messages and the responses, and thought I would see what constructive 
things can be done with an old friend.
