You can get around this VERY easily if you have ColorSwitch by Andrew Welch. 
It puts a small monitor icon in the menu bar (it red, orange, yellow, green,
and blue color bars in it), and allows you to change color depth and volume. 
It has to be one of the most useful CP's that I have.
